It gives its name to the Cybele family of asteroids that orbit outward from the Sun from the 2:1 orbital resonance with Jupiter. Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Pappe: Enumerationis plantarum phaenogamarum Lipsiensium specimen. Leipzig,  Hirschfeld, 1827, [xx] 42 [1]pp.,

*** C.W. Ludwig Pappe studied medicine and botany at the University of Leipzig, qualifying in medicine in 1827 with a thesis on the flowering plants of the Leipzig district: Enumerationes plantarum phaenogamarum lipsiensium specimen. The thesis was published in extended form in 1829 as Synopsis plantarum phaenogamarum Lipsiensium indigenarum. Pappe arrived in Cape Town in January 1831 and was registered as a physician, surgeon and accoucheur that same year. Though he later signed all official documents as "L. Pappe, MD", he was registered on the basis of a Diploma in Physic, not the degree Doctor of Medicine (MD). Perhaps it was acceptable practice at the time for a holder of the diploma to sign himself "MD".Pappe joined the South African Medical Society (1827-1847), the first of its kind in southern Africa, in 1832. During the measles epidemic of 1839 he was one of three doctors in charge of the temporary hospital at Cape Town, and from 1855 to 1858 was physician to the European Sick and Burial Society, and to the Widows' Fund. However, his main interest was in botany and he started collecting plants around Cape Town in the year of his arrival.

*** The Fumitories, of which Corydalis and Fumaria are the only two fully British genera, are distinguished in the Order of Fumariaceae by having one of the petals swollen or spurred at the base, and a oneseeded capsule which does not open. The name is said to be derived either from the fact that its whitish, blue-green colour gives it the appearance of smoke rising from the ground, or, according to Pliny, because the juice of the plant brings on such a flow of tears that the sight becomes dim as with smoke, and hence its reputed use in affections of the eye. According to the ancient exorcists, when the plant is burned, its smoke has the power of expelling evil spirits, it having been used for this purpose in the famous geometrical gardens of St. Gall. There is a legend that the plant was produced, not from seed, but from vapours arising out of the earth. Fumaria (Fumitory, Fumewort; from Latin fu-mus terrae, smoke of the earth) is a genus of 50 species of annual plants, native to Europe, Africa and Asia, most diverse in the Mediterranean region, and introduced to North and South America and Australia. Fumaria indica contains the alkaloids fuyuziphine and alpha-hydrastine Fumaria indica may have anti-inflammatory and anti-pain potential. He  was Dutch on his father's side and English on his mother's, and was born at Antwerp. To avoid religious persecution his parents came to England while he was a child, and for some years he studied at Caius College, Cambridge  after which he went to Leiden, where he graduated with an M.A. In 1586, he was appointed professor of history at the University of Wittenberg, but, as he refused to subscribe the formula concordiae, he lost his position. From 1589 to 1592, he taught at Rostock, after which he went to Heidelberg, where in 1602 he was appointed librarian to the university.

Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann: Observationes biologicae de magnetismo animali et de ovorum animaliumque caloris quadam constantia eiusque explicatione dissertatio inauguralis medica.Leipzig, Breitkopf & Haertel, 1826
*** In Germany a few investigators still busied themselves with mesmerism. It was found that in 1818 the University of Leipzig published a graduation thesis by Wendler, entitled De Magnetismi animalis efficacia rite dijudieanda; and another in 1826, by Volkmann, Observationes biologicae de Magnetistmo animali. But in the main, after about 1820, the belief in animal magnetism declined. This retrogression was caused as much by the rise of the exact natural sciences as by the unscientific and uncritical hankering after mystical phenomena, which could not but revolt serious investigators.

***  Eduard Zeis (1807-1868) plastic surgical bibliographer extraordinary. Even before Joseph Lister (1827-1912) discovered and adopted the concept of antisepsis in 1867, pioneering work in the field of plastic surgery had already begun in Germany very early in the nineteenth century. The best known surgeons working in this field at that time were Karl Ferdinand von Graefe (1787-1840) and Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach (1794-1847) in Berlin and Philipp Franz von Walther (1782-1849) in Bonn and Munich. Three early plastic surgeons who were active in Dresden can and should be compared to them. These are, in chronological order, Johann August Wilhelm Hedenus (the elder; 1760-1834), Friedrich August von Ammon (1799-1861) and Eduard Zeis (1807-1868); Zeis' career is reviewed briefly here with the accent on Dresden. Born in Dresden on 1 October 1807, after finishing his training in 1932 he set up in general practice in his home town. Here he wrote his epoch-making "Handbuch der plastischen Chirurgie" (Handbook of Plastic Surgery; published in 1838), thus establishing the term "plastische Chirurgie", which has been adopted and assimilated into different languages all over the world. The best wishes of his friends went with him when Zeis went to take up the professorship in Marburg. This position did not live up to his expectations, however. In 1849 he returned to Dresden, where he worked until his death as senior medical officer in the newly established municipal hospital in Dresden-Friedrichstadt. * G. *** Johann Christian August Clarus (1774-1854) , German anatomist and surgeon. From 1820 to 1848 he was a professor of clinical medicine at the university as well as senior physician at Jacobshospital in Leipzig. In 1840/41 he served as university rector. On 24 August 1821, Clarus was called upon to write a report on the mental condition of confessed murderer Johann Christian Woyzeck (1780–1824) , a Leipzig wigmaker who later became a soldier. In 1821, Woyzeck, in a fit of jealousy, murdered Christiane Woost, a widow with whom he had been living. He was later publicly beheaded..   After meeting with Woyzeck, Clarus maintained that he was accountable for his actions, despite the fact that he suffered from hallucinations. Later on, he was asked to write a second report. He met with Woyzeck several more times, and reached the same conclusion as in his initial report. Clarus' writings on the mental state of Woyzeck were published with the title "Die Zurechnungsfähigkeit des Morders Johann Christian Woyzeck" and subsequently used as a source by dramatist Georg Büchner for the stage play "Woyzeck"

Carl Caspari (1798-1828) was the son of a village minister at Zschorlau, near Delitzsch (Rapou, Histoire de la Doctrine Médicale Homoeopathique, Vol. II., p. 130-36. Kleinert's Geschichte der Homoeopathie, p. 130.) He studied and graduated at Leipzig. He was the grandson of the Prof. D. Schott. In 1822 he delivered a course of lectures on practical surgery, to the students at Leipsich, being at the same time attracted to the teachings of Hahnemann. After serious studies he published a work entitled "My Observations Upon Homoeopathy." He sought to reconcile the two doctrines. Having friends in both camps he attempted an impossible amalgamation between Homoeopathy and Allopathy. Surgery lead been his favorite study, and his first researches into Homoeopathy were to determine the reciprocal influence of this branch on the two parties in the art of healing. He published many memoirs upon the subject. He believed that surgery and medicine need no longer be divided, but that with the aid of Homoeopathy surgical diseases could be more successfully treated. Rather than disturb his researches he refused the chair of Homoeopathy at the University of Cracow, offered at the suggestion of the Consul General at Leipsig by the Russian Secretary of State, M. de Freigang. Caspari especially excelled in didactic writings. He was actively engaged in his literary work at Leipsic when, sometime iii the beginning of the year 1828, he was attacked with the Smallpox, during an epidemic, and, being delirious, during the absence of his nurse he got hold of a loaded gun with which he shot himself through the head.

Claudication, literally 'limping' (Latin), is a medical term usually referring to impairment in walking, or pain, discomfort or tiredness in the legs that occurs during walking and is relieved by rest. The perceived level of pain from claudication can be mild to extremely severe. Claudication is most common in the calves but it can also affect the feet, thighs, hips, buttocks, or arms. The word "claudication" comes from the Latin "claudicare" meaning to limp. Claudication that appears after a short amount of walking may sometimes be described by US medical professionals by the number of typical city street blocks the patient can walk before the onset of claudication. Thus, "one-block claudication" refers to claudication that appears after walking one block, "two-block claudication" appears after walking two blocks, etc.

Carl Gottlob Franz: Monographia de labio leporino : spec. I / [Präs.:] Leipzig, 1825, 40pp.,
*** Dr. KARL GOTTLOB FRANZ. (1795-1835) Karl Gottlob Franz was born May 8, 1795, in Planen in the Royal Saxon Voigtland where his father was a respectable well to do citizen and baker. (Archiv fur die hom. Heilkunst, Vol. XV., pt. 3, p. 167.) In the year 1832 ; he thought it best to accept a medical diploma. On this occasion he wrote and defended his inaugural dissertation : "Monographiae de labio leporino, specimen I."
He was one of the Pioneers of homeopathy To his fellow-students who did not know Homoeopathy except from the presentation of their teachers and thus only in a very defective and perverted manner, homoeopathy was an abomination, and everyone who received it a fool ; thus he was shunned, mocked, and was also distressed in many other ways under the pretext of medical trials. So his stock of medicines was repeatedly sealed up and confiscated, and he himself on account of unauthorized cures, as they were called, was subjected to considerable fines ; though ninny others of his fellow students did the same, only not in the hated Homoeopathic manner. He was one of Hahnemann’s first pupils.

Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann:   De causis quibusdam incremento artis medicæ amplificando atque promovendo maxime infensis specimen primum .Leipzig, B.G. Teubner, 1824, 55pp.,
Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann (1 July 1801 – 21 April 1877) , German physiologist, anatomist, and philosopher. He specialized in the study of the nervous and optic systems. He was born in Leipzig, and studied there from 1821, and in 1826 he obtained his doctorate. In 1828 he was habilitated as Privatdozent at the University of Leipzig. It was there that he became professor extraordinary of zootomy in 1834. In 1837 he went to Dorpat as professor of physiology, pathology and semiotics. However, his residence in Dorpat was short: he left for Halle as early as 1843. In 1854 Volkmann assumed as well the teaching of anatomy, until 1872, when physiology was branched off and given to Julius Bernstein. Today, he is most remembered for his additions to the physiology of the nervous system and physiological optics. In 1842 he demonstrated that sympathetic nerves were largely made up of medullated fibres arising from sympathetic and spinal ganglia. However, he also delineated and identified numerous features of gross anatomy, including Volkmann's canals. Additionally, Volkmann was an evangelical who opposed materialism and gave a number of speeches against the materialist assumption of identity between the body and mind.

*** Trigeminal neuralgia is sudden, severe facial pain. It's often described as a sharp shooting pain or like having an electric shock in the jaw, teeth or gums. Trigeminal neuralgia is usually caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve. This is the nerve inside the skull that transmits sensations of pain and touch from your face, teeth and mouth to your brain.

Felix Victor Birch-Hirschfeld,  German physician, ( 1842 – 1899 )  attended the University of Leipzig, particularly as a pupil of Karl August Wunderlich (1815-1877) and Ernst Leberecht Wagner (1828-1888). Already before graduation he worked in a cholera hospital under Wunderlich. He received his doctorate at Leipzig in 1867, and subsequently worked as an assistant under Wagner in the Leipzig pathological institute until 1869. That year he left the institute in Leipzig to become assistant in the mental asylums of Colditz and Sonnenstein. In 1870 he returned to pathology to become prosector at the city hospital in Dresden. In 1871 he became teacher of pathological anatomy at the military Fortbildungskurses, in 1875 Medizinalrat in the Medizinal-Kollegium, and in 1881 also assumed leadership of the mental ward at the Dresden Hospital. On April 1, 1885, Birch-Hirschfeld was appointed Julius Cohnheim's (1839-1884) successor in the chair of pathological anatomy at Leipzig. He made important contributions to bacteriology, with tuberculosis his main interest in infectious diseases. As early as in 1886 Birch-Hirschfeld attracted a severe inflammation of the lung that eventually took his life in 1899, when he was 57 years old. His son Arthur Birch-Hirschfeld, born 1871, was professor of ophthalmology at Königsberg

Sialolithiasis (also termed salivary calculi, or salivary stones), is a condition where a calcified mass or sialolith forms within a salivary gland, usually in the duct of the submandibular gland (also termed "Wharton's duct"). The stones are often referred to as a salivary duct calculus and mainly occur in middle-aged adults. It’s the most common cause of blockage in the salivary ducts. Because salivary duct stones cause mouth pain, both doctors and dentists can diagnose this condition and provide medical treatment if necessary. Although the stones rarely cause serious problems and can often be treated at home.

 Doctorate: 1805 in Leipzig (Medicine)  University lecturer: 1805 - 1806, 1810 - 1843 Leipzig
Heinroth, the son of a surgeon, initially studied medicine in the town of his birth. He then travelled via Rome to Vienna, where he continued his studies under the tutelage of Johann Peter Frank. Afterwards he studied theology for a short period in Erlangen before returning to Leipzig where he was awarded a doctorate in medicine and qualified to lecture in 1806. In the years of war which followed, he was forced to interrupt his studies and served as a military doctor. In 1810 he returned to lecturing and also published his first important work, the Beyträge zur Krankheitslehre (contributions to the study of illness). Heinroth, who became an extraordinary professor in 1811 and a full professor of physical medicine in 1827, remained loyal to Leipzig despite lucrative offers from Dorpat and St Petersburg. He died while serving as Dean in 1843. He introduced the term "psychosomatic" into medicine.
His later books: Störungen des Seelenlebens (disorders of the soul, 1818) and System der psychisch-gerichtlichen Medizin (a system of physical-forensic medicine, 1825) are considered to be Heinroth's most important works. In his philosophical studies, he favoured the views espoused by Herder while distancing himself from Schelling, Fichte and particularly from Hegel.
Throughout his work Johann Christian August Heinroth regarded sin to be the cause of mental illness. In his " The Sin in the Aetiological Concept " he investigated what exactly heunderstood by sin. Based on a thorough analysis of his own texts, this study showed that on the one hand he referred to sin in a Christian-Protestant sense. On the other, however, a moral-ethical code of conduct was also involved. Thus, hedid not regard sin as a singular event, but rather as a life conducted in a wrong way for years or even decades, by which he meant a steady striving towards earthly, bodily satisfaction

The treatment comes from the fruit of the gourd-like colocynth plant, which is native to Asia Minor. Ailments typically treated with colocynthis include constipation; liver and gallbladder problems; diarrhea; colic; and painful menstruation. Others use the herb to treat nerve and joint issues, such as sciatica, rheumatism and facial neuralgia.

Peritonitis , an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs. Peritonitis may be localized or generalized, and may result from infection (often due to rupture of a hollow abdominal organ as may occur in abdominal trauma or inflamed appendix) or from a non-infectious process.

*** The medical practice or technique of cauterization (or cauterisation, or cautery) is the burning of part of a body to remove or close off a part of it, which destroys some tissue in an attempt to mitigate bleeding and damage, remove an undesired growth, or minimize other potential medical harm, such as infections when antibiotics are unavailable. The practice was once widespread for treatment of wounds, amputations etc.. Its utility before the advent of antibiotics was said to be effective at more than one level:
