Rosenfeldt, Niels Erik The "Special" World. Stalin's power apparatus and the soviet system's secret Structures of communication 2 volumes, 2009, 1153pp., illustrated. When the Soviet Union collapsed the formerly closed archives were opened for research to a certain degree. Since the mid-nineties Niels Erik Rosenfeldt has on several occasions visited these archives. Partly based on this research he here presents a thorough and groundbreaking study of some of the most secret structures of Soviet society - especially in the Stalin era. As a starting point Niels Erik Rosenfeldt presents a detailed description of the principles and procedures for secrecy in the Soviet System of the 1920s. This is followed by an investigation of the development of Stalin's secret chancellery - the "Secret Department", the "Special Sector" - from the early 1920s to the death of Stalin in 1953, and of the various internal and external factors affecting the growth, shape and operational scope of this apparatus during the same period. More specifically there is a lengthy discussion of the role of the secret chancellery in the Soviet decision-making process. In the analysis of the Soviet State Security Service the main emphasis is placed on the central complex of ultra-secret "special departments" and "special sections". The examination of the apparatus of the Communist International focuses on the clandestine chancellery and communication departments which can - more or less directly - be compared to the structural pattern of Stalin's secret chancellery and related offices in the Soviet Communist Party. KONTINENT/ CONTINENT volumes 2 - 110, 115,117 - 133 - 136 (1974 - 2008 The journal Continent/Kontinent was founded in 1974 by a well-known writer and dissident Vladimir Maksimov. ( Vladimir Yemelyanovich Maksimov = LEV ALEKSEYEVICH SAMSONOV, Russian writer (b. Dec. 10, 1930, Moscow, U.S.S.R.--d. March 26, 1995, Paris, France), The name for this new uncensored journal of the Russian democratic movement was suggested by A. Solzhenitsyn. During the 16 years of its publishing in Paris the magazine became one of the most prestigious and influential voices against communist ideology. At various times the editorial board included such prominent world-renowned figures as R. Conquest, A. Sacharov, E. Ionesko, J. Brodsky, etc. Works by Vasiliy Aksenov, Josef Brodsky, Olivie Cleman, Vladimir Maksimov, Robert Conquest, Ernst Neizvestny, Vittorio Strada and others were published on the pages of Continent. In 1990 as a result of the historic changes occurring in Russia, Vladimir Maksimov decided to move the publishing headquarters to Moscow. In 1992 Igor Vinogradov became the new editor-in -chief, starting with the issue 72. I. Vinogradov started his creative career in the Tvardovsky's Noviy Mir, and is well known in Russia for his democratic views. The magazine has not started a new issue numbering system, but was reregistered in the Ministry of Mass Media and Information of the Russian Federation and became a part of the Russian media. Currently Continent has representatives in USA, Canada, France, Israel, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Currently the editorial board includes, among others, V. Aksenov, N. Korgavin, S. Averintsev, G. Vladimov, O. Cleman, E. Neizvestniy and G. Nivat. Continent is a literary, political and religious commentary on the complicated cultural and social situations experienced today. Continent is published four times a year. The main section of the magazine devoted to literature contains stories, narratives and short novels. Each issue gives the reader an in-depth analysis of the directions and movements within the current literature, publishing the most important and leading writers. The permanent sections of Continent are: RUSSIA, FACTS-WITNESSES-DOCUMENTS, RELIGION, GNOSIS, LITERATURE AND TIME, READING, ART. A permanent column CHRONICA. contains a current review of the political, religious and cultural events in Russia. £295 Dimitrijevich,St.M., Prot. and many

Ikonnikov, V.S., Opyt Russkoi Istoriografii. 2 Parts in 4 Volumes. Reprint of the edition Kiev, 1891-1908. 4254pp., 1966, cloth. fine. £395 Kamchatnov, Al. (ed.) Paleia tolkovaia. 2002. 647pp., b.t., t.p. The text of Paleia in Old Russian prepared and translated into Modern Russian by Al. Kamchatnov. The book includes a foreword by Vadim Kozhinov, a commentary by Vl. Mil'kov and S. Polianskii, a preface by Al. Kamchatnov and an article on wording, contents, and religious and philosophical, and encyclopaedic value of the literary monument by Vl. Mil'kov and S. Polianskii. This is the first translation of the Old Russian manuscript written in 1406. Paleia is an interpretation of the Old Testament. Dmitrii Likhachev also contributed to this edition. The Paleya Tolkovaya is an outstanding memorial of early Russian medieval literature. As there was no full Slavonic text of the Holy Bible the Paleya used to be the main source of knowledge of the Saint History of the Old Testament. Besides the Bible narration itself the Paleya contains numerous interpretations of theological, philosophical, and natural science character combined with harsh religious polemics with paganism, Judaism, and Islam. That's why the Paleya is a brilliant example of a medieval encyclopedia. In spite of all signs of a wonderful masterpiece of Old Russian literature the Paleya Tolkovaya has never been translated into modern Russian, and its Old Russian text was published only once in the end of the 19th century thanks to Ph.D. Tikhonravov's students. The basic text was published according to the oldest Kolomenskiy version with differences of 9 later copies given. Such outstanding connoisseurs of Old Russian literature as academicians Dmitriy S. Likhachiov and Alexander M. Panchenko used to mention the necessity of giving scientific comments to the edition of the Paleya and its translation. A great scientist and critic Vadim V. Kozhinov became an initiator of such an edition. In this edition Ph.D. Alexander M. Kamchatnov prepared a united Old Russian text of the Paleya Tolkovaya, which is the first experience of such linguistic work in Russian science. He also made a translation of the most complicated Old Russian text into modern Russian. Highly detailed theological, philosophical, and historical comments written by Ph.D. Vladimir V. Milkov and Master of Arts Sergey M. Polyanskiy follow the text. The edition is illustrated with the drawings from the ancient text made by an outstanding artist: A. N. Agarkov. The decoration of the book was made by Prof. Alexander B. Konopliov. £275 Krivoshiev,A. (sost.) Karta Na B''lgariya s Prilezhashchite k Nei Derzhavi.
