Signature in ink on reverse of title. Some slight browning to corners
and inner margins of initial and rear few pages and very occasionally in
the margins. In a dark brown new quarter morocco binding,
spine with 5 raised bands and red title label, cloth covered boards,
new end papers ** . John Baptist Jackson (1701-1754) trained as a wood
engraver before traveling to Paris and, finally, to Venice where he became
proficient in the chiaroscuro woodcut technique printed in several colours.
He is noted chiefly for his major work comprising 24 chiaroscuro woodcuts
after paintings by Venetian masters made from 1739 to 1743 and published
in Venice in a bound volume in 1745, now considered one of the greatest
examples of 18th-century print-making. When Jackson returned to London
in 1745 he stopped producing his woodcuts and instead began to work in
textile and wallpaper patterning. These efforts did not succeed and he
issued a book in 1754 entitled An Essay on the Invention of Engraving and
Printing in Chiaro Oscuro, but did not produce any further work . £
